Wonders of the Ancient World... Grand Archaeological Tour of Indonesia, Burma & Cambodia

11 days from £9,350 for 2025 per person

This itinerary is one of Ampersand's Top 10 Cultural Holidays.

Asia is home to some of the world’s richest archaeological sites. However, the ancient temples of Bagan, Borobudur and Angkor Wat are without a doubt the region’s highlights. Vast, beautiful and beguiling, these three temple complexes contain a magic that makes them stand out from the crowd. Although all very different, we feel that the three locations compliment each very well, and, if visited one after another, combine to create a wonderful journey through Asia and through time.

Starting with three nights in Borobudur, the itinerary kicks off at Amanjiwo – a hotel that compliments the temples beautifully in both style and location. In addition to tours of the temples with your private guide, your time in Borobudur would include an elephant safari and a trek through the Menorah Hills.

From Borobudur journey on to Bagan, located in Burma’s central plains. View the temples at sunrise by hot air balloon, cruise the Irrawaddy River at sunset and visit the site's 2,000 crumbling and atmospheric temples on horseback. While in Bagan stay at the luxurious Aureum Palace with its temple-facing infinity pool and well located viewing tower.

Your final stop will be the Angkor archaeological site – home to the magnificent Angkor Wat, amongst many others. From your base at Amansara, previously used by King Sihanouk as a guesthouse, visit the temples as often as you like with your private guide and personal remorque. Take a cycle ride through the leafy area of Ta Phrom or, if you fancy something completely different, go kayaking on Tonle Sap Lake.

This luxury holiday is a suggested itinerary; it can be booked as it is or used as a starting point for creating your own bespoke tour of Asia. If you would like to see similar trips, take a look at our collection of Epic Journeys and Honeymoons, as well as our Ultimate Luxury, Active and Multi-Country itineraries.

Client Testimonials

We really enjoyed the trip and were happy that we squeezed so much into a few short days. The Burmese people were lovely and the sites were fantastic. We really enjoyed the balloon ride and would highly suggest it to others in the future. The trip went super smoothly and a good time plus learning happened for all. Yangon was nice as the Strand was quite amazing and we of course loved the giant gold temple. Many thanks for all of your help and look forward to future travel with you.
