Waterberg Area

If you're interested in the future of game viewing in South Africa you might want to visit this forward-thinking reserve, located in the north of the Limpopo district. The Waterberg plateau is a 15,000 square kilometre expanse of savannah, rolling grassland and deciduous forest. In 2001, it was declared a UNESCO site and became known as the Waterberg Savannah Biosphere. Within it are two private game reserves and the Lapala Wilderness area. You can easily tick off the 'Big Five' whilst supporting its eco-projects including a rhino sanctuary and a school, which teaches conservation as its core principle. In Lapala you can see evidence of the Bushmen that inhabited this area 2000 years ago in the rock painting of rhino and antelope daubed on the cliffs above the Palala River. We recommend bedding down in a luxurious tented suite with spoiling extras like stone bath tubs, private decks and hammocks.

To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.
